Annual food drive nets 7 tons of food for Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico
Clovis postal carriers collected over 7 tons of food during the 2013 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. During the annual drive, food left curbside by residents was collected from the Clovis, Cannon, Texico and Melrose communities. The food drive began May 11 and food donations were continuously collected in the weeks that followed.
All food collected will go to the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico and supplement four of its programs to feed over 2,249 households throughout Eastern New Mexico.
“We are thankful for the donations made by our communities. These donations help meet a basic need for emergency food for families living in Eastern New Mexico. The tremendous amount of work done by Jim
Ridling and local letter carriers to oversee this drive always results in a successful event, year after year. And support from volunteers, including Altrusans and Cannon personnel, is fundamental to everything that we do,” said Food Bank Executive Director MelindaJoy Pattison.
For this year’s drive, over 19,000 AARP-sponsored paper bags were distributed by the postal service to encourage residents to donate.
In its 30th year, the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico partners with 25 agencies and 24 schools in Curry, Roosevelt, De Baca, Quay and Guadalupe Counties to distribute emergency food to families and individuals.
