[FREE TAX ASSISTANCE]
[Clovis, NM], [February 4, 2014]
2-1-1 and United Way of Eastern New Mexico are encouraging people to use the free tax services available to our local communities. By using the free tax assistance local qualifying families could save a substantial amount of money. Money that could be spent somewhere else, buying groceries, for instance. Most online tax services charge fees to complete tax forms, as do most local tax agencies and businesses. Filing taxes does not have to be expensive or a hassle. If you made an annual income of less than $57,000 or are over 60, these free tax services are available for you.
Call 2-1-1 for the answers. We will give you the information you need to file your taxes for free online. And if online filing is not your preference, we can provide you with the contact information of the six locations (AARP, CCC, ENMU, Baxter-Curren Senior Center, Roy Walker Recreation Center, Clovis-Carver Library) that will personally assist you in filing your taxes.
Last year, AARP New Mexico and Tax Help New Mexico prepared and transmitted over 66,000 returns. These returns generated over $40 million in tax refunds and saved the clients approximately $10 million in tax preparation fees.
UWENM promotes financial stability and independence for our lower income New Mexicans. Last year, over 70% of eligible individuals did not apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit bedause they either weren't aware they were eligible or did not file taxes because they weren't required to file based on income guidelines. Qualifying individuals can save anywhere from $400 to over $5000 by applying for EITC. That's a significant amount of money going back into the pockets of our New Mexican families.
